In-Season Expectations
Practice:
- Unless the team is competing or traveling, practice will begin at 3:00 Monday-Friday.
- Fall cross country (XC) will meet in the aerobics room.
- Spring track and field meets in the back gym.
- Regular weekday practices will end at 5:00. Varsity practices will end at 5:30.
- Athletes are required to attend weekday practices.
- In distance running, consistent and gradual progress are necessary to avoid over-use injury. As such, athletes who regularly miss practices may be withheld from workouts and races at coaches' discretion.
- Saturday practices are held on Saturdays when we are not competing at invites. Practices begin at 9:00.
- All Saturday practices will all be held at Shorecrest for Fall 2025.
- If we are not in the aerobics room at 9:00, we may be gathering on the track.
- Saturday practices are optional, but are a) highly recommended for new/JV runners, and b) expected for varsity runners.
- Injured athletes should continue to attend practice. Coaches will assign productive cross-training and re-hab to minimize loss of fitness due to inactivity and reduce the risk of re-injury.
Meets:
- Athletes are expected to remain for the duration of the meet to support their teammates. In some cases, this will mean hanging out for ours after your race concludes.
- This is the same standard of sportsmanship expected in any other SC team--the starting pitcher on the baseball team would not go home after being relieved.
- Athletes may leave meets early or arrive late in the case of unavoidable appointments/commitments (e.g., SAT test dates commonly overlap w/Saturday XC meets). In these cases:
- The district generally prohibits students from driving themselves to/from meets that are outside of the Shoreline/Edmonds area (i.e., if we rode a bus there).
- A parent/guarding must check in w/a coach before leaving a meet with their athlete(s).
- Some bigger invites may have entrance fees--don't feel the need to pay your way in just to notify a coach that you're leaving w/your child! We can figure it out as-needed.
- Although we are a no-cut team and many (most) of our athletes' first experience with organized sports, we do expect all athletes to attend and compete in meets.
- We can--and have--accommodated any level of fitness and/or anxiety. We only request that each athlete give the team and their teammates their best efforts.
